Manchester historic pub crawl
We’ve put together a historic pub crawl that traverses this great city of ours, beginning in the south at The Salutation and concluding at The Old Wellington on Shambles Square. Each watering hole is historic in one way or another. Whilst The Salutation and many other pubs can be traced back to the early nineteenth century, the bones of some buildings date back even further. The Temple and Circus Tavern are two of the smallest establishments you’ll visit: the former being a repurposed subterranean Victorian public lavatory, and the latter being a Grade II listed micro-pub which has been serving since the mid-nineteenth century. The Molly House only became a pub fairly recently, but the lovely building dates back further to its time housing a worsted tailoring business, and today reflects the vibrant Gay Village around it with a fabulous gable end mural. The Crown and Kettle has been sensitively refurbished in recent times and boasts a fabulous ceiling. Our route goes as far north as the late nineteenth century Marble Arch inn, before dropping down towards the two historic pubs at Shambles Square, both of which have fascinating histories involving their relocation to accommodate the nearby shopping centre.
